Reflections On No Cathedral In Particular

Mourning lost love, pain from neglect, abuse, and awe of the unknown has led the hopeless to religious sentiments, but these doctrines, born with the intention of healing, are not the cures in themselves. The colossal space, the penetrating sun to the interior, the reverberating music, the food, the sense of belonging, and the gathering of people is a method of collective healing. Spaces of worship gave cultures the chance to productively transform their struggle safely and sustainably.

A cathedral’s structure, its datums and centerlines, its offsets and its resultant rigidity gives us both physical, bodily infrastructure, but also metaphysical release through its immanent symbols, muted signs, and open space above. The brick and the stone and the tile can be repeated and disseminated by just two human hands for seemingly forever which gives the humble human, the wanderer, a luxury for their eyes. In a city, without words, without nature, without others, and without technology, that is what we can live for, as long as we have an imagination to engage with these aesthetics of solitude.

The expansive interiority of a place of worship, this materialization of natural forces, creates a hushed openness. A place where a culture can be silent and at peace with silence. People can then come across a gratitude, an awareness, and a calmness of a moment to release control and selfishness to enjoy one’s mind. This hushed openness creates a reverberating quality and echo which we all are most fortunate to feel. The drop of a needle, the drop of a bag, or a jacket onto the pews has a momentous quality as the tall space, matched with the hard stone and flat surfaces, reflects again that initially minor act - we are standing on a piano’s sustain pedal, inhabiting the oculus’ cavern of a guitar. This elongation of sound thanks to the extension and extrusion of space upwards allows the organ to sit so proudly behind us, its sound does not end at the end of the pipe, but it soars into the vaults, the domes, the naves, and the colonnades, into the ears, and into the mind, for it to rest in a vibration of reflection.

There is no need to believe in mysteries, conspiracies, or religious doctrines, the architecture itself and the cultural artefact of music within can be enough to quell any nervous heart. No words, just aesthetic-spatial care is crystalized in places of worship and has been for millennia. Cathedrals are not obsolete but an intuitive gift to humanity, an inhabitable musical instrument.
